Editor’s note: I know this is called Pet News and Views. I, however, like to think of all animals as pets—not that we own them, but as creatures we are responsible for. That is why today’s post is about African elephants..

It’s easy to assume that something that lives in a foreign country thousands of miles away will always be here for us. And that one day when we’ve made enough money, collected enough air miles, and put in enough hours, we’ll be able to hop on a plane to see these magnificent creatures in the [...]

The unconditional love of a puppy is one of life’s great pleasures. Their curiosity, innocence, and joy for life are inspirational and bring out the best in us. If you’re considering bringing a puppy in to your home, it’s important to give careful consideration to such factors as breed traits, how big the dog will be as an adult, access to exercise, your personal schedule, and the long-term cost of caring for your [...]

Valiente, a 28-pound Chihuahua/border collie mix, was found tied to a trash can on a busy street in San Juan. His owner had dumped the dog there after he failed as a watch dog. (Valiente is a bit of a softy, who almost never barks.) Injured, diseased, and emaciated dogs can be found roaming most streets, beaches, mountainsides, and commercial centers. In fact, some areas, such as Dead Dog Beach, have become notorious dumping grounds for unwanted [...]

It gets earlier every year it seems with all there is to do—parties, entertaining, shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc. Often our furry family members tend to get ignored with so much hustling and bustling going on. Dogs can experience restlessness and anxiety as a result. So [...]

Who’s a copycat? To copy or mimic is the highest form of flattery. Maybe we would do well to copy or mimic others who possess the art of living to purrr-fection or at least to a degree of high standards. You know, sniff around more and become fully aware of your [...]
Dear Readers,
Pet News and Views covers a broad geographic scope. While the focus of this post is Ohio, it really affects all of us because the dogs that are sold at auction in Ohio often wind up in stores nationwide. At the end of this post, Mary O’Connor-Shaver suggests ways that all of us can [...]

A lamb born on a transport truck on the way to a Bronx, NY, slaughterhouse was rescued yesterday by Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, and brought to their shelter in Watkins Glen, NY. The minutes old lamb was discovered by a Good Samaritan who was shopping at [...]

Those of us who fight to protect animals have taken pages from history and learned from all the great campaigns for human rights and social equality–for religious freedom, for Jews, for women, against apartheid, for the American Negro, for the specially challenged, and for homosexuals. In each of those [...]
