Why I Love Pet News and Views Readers

By Michele C. Hollow of Pet News and Views

I asked and you came through! My annual call for “Comments for Meals” garnered 2788 responses. That’s 139,400 meals for shelter cats and dogs.

Those of you who know me, know I hate asking! You, however, made it so easy. I couldn’t believe how fast the comments rolled in. It was a quick few days, and for most of them, I was glued to this site. I just clicked “approve, approve, approve.” I did read each and every comment. We all agree that more needs to be done to protect and care for cats and dogs. We all share the same beliefs that we need to do more to promote spay/neuter, adoption, and animal kindness.

You came through and showed me that your hearts are big.  So many of you shared this campaign on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media sites.

I want to thank Maria Milito of Q104.3FM for posting on Facebook and on her radio’s website. Thank you to Audrey and Eldad Hagar of Hope for Paws for championing their fans to leave a comment here. Thanks to Judy Fridono, mom to Surf dogs Ricochet and Rina for calling on your fans to leave a comment.  So many of you–too many too mention–left comments and asked friends and family to do so too.

A big thanks to Iams for agreeing to let me do this campaign once again, and to Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC)  for having this idea in the first place.  HWAC began the program in 1999 with 14 participating shelters in San Diego with the support of Iams. Now, their Home 4 the Holidays campaign helps hundreds of animal adoption centers and rescues throughout the U.S.

One reader suggested that more pet food companies donate food to food banks so people will be able to stay with their pets. I think that is a great idea.  One of my favorite programs is AniMeals, started by HWAC. It brings pet food to homebound Meals on Wheels recipients with pets.  If anyone has any thoughts or ideas on other programs that benefits pets, drop me a line.

I’ve met so many new friends through this campaign, and I hope you will all visit often. You can even subscribe by clicking here. Thank you one and all. This has been an especially Happy Birthday!

Wow, that is a lot of tummies to feed. You are wonderful, and so is your blog.

  • What a wonderful outcome. Wow, I didn’t think of you having to click approve 2,788 times, lol – I’m sure each time felt like a blessing.

So many caring people, and good for you, Michele, for hosting this for all those cats & dogs ♡

Donating critter food to food banks is a fanastic idea!

  • You give voice to the voiceless, and food to the hungry. I applaud you for it. Have you investigated what’s become of the pets lost in the superstorm? I got my beloved Tex who was rescued from Louisiana and sent to New Jersey along with 700 other dogs. I remember how scared and trembling he was when I first brought him home. Nothing better than rescuing an animal who has been through a horrific experience like a hurricane. Tex is the best dog I ever had. And I so remember him, a 2 month old hungry

We love you and Pet News and Views too!

  • Thanks Linda, I am working with a few shelters in the Hurricane Sandy affected areas to see about posting lost photos and getting food/supplies to the shelters.–Michele

  • LOL

Michele, I love your passion and concern and hope that you will be able to sway IAMS to put some of that muscle into catch, neuter, release programs. There will still be more tummies to feed than they can possibly cope with and much additional good will for the company which seems to have the overview in mind beyond direct product placement. I’m not saying anything againt poduct placement only that there is more to this picture. Jackie

Michele, Pet News and Views is a great blog. We really appreciate your calls to action and all of your articles.

  • Inez

I can’t stand those blogs with the cutesy photos and grammatically incorrect sentences. You are a journalist, and a great writer who really cares about animals.

  • Carol

Asking people to support you with a comment is so easy. It’s when we get asked to go to sites to vote, log in and give out personal info, which means we are on mailing lists, and then they ask us to vote over and over again. That gets tiring. Asking us to comment to help animals, well girlfriend you can ask any time.

  • Toni

    Love Pet News and Views!

  • Georgina

Would love it if you could do a holiday gift guide of ethical pet products.

  • Debra

I’ve been a subscriber for a long while now, and try to read every article. You write very well. Thankfully, you only post 2x a week. Those other blogs that expect us to read their posts every single day is expecting too much!

  • Vivien

Just ask any time, and I will leave a comment. I look forward to your next contest.

  • Roger

Happy to comment, and I like the idea of giving food out to Meals on Wheels recipients. If anyone knows of a homebound person with pets, make sure their pets have food too.

  • Sara

Michele, you are an angel for what you do for our four legged companions that otherwise have no voices!!It makes me terribly sad seeing all the stories of animal cruelty and abuse, you and a few other organizations working endlessly to help them makes me see that there is indeed still kindness and compassions left in this world. I applaud you and other angels like you for your passion and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. God bless!

  • Thank you Nikki! I appreciate your kind words!–Best, Michele
