When Loretta Swit, best known as Hot Lips Houlihan on the hit show MASH, popped a vegan hors’ d’œuvre into her mouth, she did a little dance and asked, “Isn’t it great that we don’t have to ask if this is vegan?”
As a lifelong animal lover, Loretta came out to support one of her favorite nonprofits–Farm Sanctuary, the leading protection, education, and lobbying organization for farm animals. She was surrounded by her friends–also vegans–who shared stories about their rescues and their passions for helping animals in need.
Loretta lives in L.A. with her rescued cats and dog, and is involved with several animal nonprofits. “I love what I do,” she said. “Acting is wonderful work, and it gives you lots of opportunities; the best one is to help others.”
Her next cause is to host the annual Bideawee Gala in June. “Everybody has their thing,” said Loretta. “I think we should do what makes us happy, and helping animals–thinking, feeling creatures–is what makes me happy.”
“I don’t eat or wear animals, but I never tell people not to–that’s just my view,” she said.
A lot of people don’t know that Loretta is quite an accomplished artist. She creates sketches, drawings, and paintings to benefit numerous animal charities–including Farm Sanctuary.
