NH House Votes to Make Greyhound Racing Illegal

On the tails of the closing of greyhound racing in Massachusetts, , the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to make dog racing illegal in the Granite State. Thanks to a bill sponsored by Rep. Mary Cooney, D-Plymouth, and the efforts of animal welfare groups headed by GREY2K USA, live greyhound racing may come to an end in New Hampshire.

For years, GREY2K USA has been fighting to end dog racing in New Hampshire. While close, their fight isn’t over. The bill, which still allows for simulcasts of dog and horse racing at the tracks, now goes to the State Senate before becoming law.

The state’s only two live dog racing tracks, Seabrook and Belmont, both suspended live racing last summer because simulcast dog and horse racing from out of state was more profitable than hosting live races.

According to the Humane Society of the U.S., the following states still allow live racing:

Alabama—3 tracks
Arkansas—1 track
Arizona—2 tracks
Rhode Island—1 track
Texas—2 tracks
Florida—13 tracks
West Virginia—2 tracks
Iowa—2 tracks
