Dogs At Work

Work is going to the dogs. On June 26, dogs and their owners will participate in the 10th annual Take Your Dog to Work Day, created by Pet Sitters International (PSI).  The idea behind the event is to celebrate dogs and promote adoption of pets from animal shelters and breed rescue clubs. Many companies find that animal-friendly policies celebrate the great relationship that people have with their pets. Companies have also found that allowing workers to bring their dogs to their place of business is good for business.

Jennifer Fearing, the Humane Society of the United State’s (HSUS) chief economist, came from a dog-friendly workplace and made a detailed case for moving in that direction. At the HSUS, Fearing provided compelling evidence that a change in policy benefits both employers and employees.

Dog-Friendly Work Policies

“It’s not just smaller companies that can enjoy the benefits of dogs in the office,” says Fearing, who, along with dog trainer Liz Palika, has written a how-to book called Dogs at Work: A Practical Guide to Creating Dog-Friendly Workplaces (Humane Society Press). “With some foresight, planning, and attention to the concerns of those who may be less excited about having dogs around, even large companies can welcome dogs into the workplace while maintaining a professional—if more engaging—culture”

In their book, Fearing and Palika, talk about rules, behavior, and benefits of having a dog at work. One main concern of companies is that dogs at work should not interfere with productivity. The dogs at work can provide time for hugs, and petting is allowed. However, unruly dogs can be fired for disobeying the rules. Their book covers everything from setting up a dog-friendly workplace to establishing guidelines for workers and their companies.

Take Your Dog to Work Day Benefits

According to a recent survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, one in five U.S. companies allows dogs at work. That same survey revealed that a significant percentage of Americans believe having pets in the workplace increases creativity, decreases absenteeism, and fosters better relationships among colleagues.

The survey also revealed:

  • 38 million people believe having pets in the workplace creates a more productive work environment
  • 46 million people who bring their pets to the workplace work longer hours

Host a Fundraiser for Pets

In conjunction with Take Your Dog to Work Day, offices are encouraged to raise awareness for their community humane organizations. Holding a fundraiser or advertising adoptable animals are some of the ways companies can support their local shelter or animal control agency.
